Kentucky New Era

People in Christian County who need financial advice have the opportunity to attend classes in a program started by finance guru Dave Ramsey.

Virginia Street Baptist Church, Hopkinsville, and Living Waters Fellowship, Oak Grove, are offering Ramsey’s 13-week program, Financial Peace University. The classes are aimed to instruct people to handle their finances through “common-sense principles and small group accountability,” according to a news release.

The weekly classes begin at 6:30 p.m. March 3 at the Oak Grove church and at 6 p.m. March 8 at the Hopkinsville church.

According to the Financial Peace University news release, the average family saves nearly $3,000 and pays off more than $5,000 of its debt in the first

91 days.

The program, which began in the Nashville, Tenn., area in 1994 and was made available on video in 1997, is available to many organizations, including churches, companies, military bases and community groups. More than one million people have changed their financial futures, according to the news release.

The classes begin with a viewing of a Dave Ramsey DVD and conclude with small group discussion of the lesson.

The lessons are meant to be “fun and entertaining,” according to the release.

“I like to put the cookies on the shelf where everyone can reach them,” Ramsey said in the release.

Each participant needs a kit to attend classes. According to www.daveramsey.com, the kit costs $129 and includes a lifetime membership to the finance university, a workbook, an envelope system, audio lessons, a CD, forms, card holders and a copy of his book “Financial Peace.” The kit can be purchased online or by calling 888-227-3223.

“FPU classes are changing lives across the country every day,” Louis Falzetti, executive vice president, said in the release. “There is something for everyone in this program, whether you are barely making ends meet, just trying to plan for retirement or seeking to build wealth.”
