The ordinance passed by the Oak Grove City Council on Sept. 20 allowing the sale or service of alcohol at convention centers, conference centers and sports arenas was praised as a means of revenue for the city and also forward-looking as the city grows and develops.

Currently, the ordinance affects only Valor Hall, which is set to open in the next several days. However, the ordinance encourages the building or addition of conference centers and sports arenas to help those businesses thrive.

“It helps us,” said Traci Cunningham, the director of the Oak Grove Tourism Commission, which operates Valor Hall. “It will allow different events, and this provides them with the option of providing alcohol. I think it’s a big plus, and I’m grateful to the mayor and City Council for passing this ordinance.”

Cunningham was in attendance at each City Council meeting that had the ordinance on its agenda, being available to answer questions and following any changes the City Council may have made.

“This ordinance opens up if a sports arena wants to move here, then the ordinance governing alcohol is already in place,” Cunningham said. “Of course, we’re growing; we’re growing by leaps and bounds, and the more we do here, the better off we’ll be.”

“It should open things up quite a bit,” Mayor Dan Potter said. “To run things, we need more money, and this is a means of getting that for the city.”

The Oak Grove City Council considered amendments to the ordinance at its meeting on Tuesday.
